Tuesday, May 14, 2013 – An 11-mile stretch of Interstate 81 (I-81) has reopened after closing Thursday morning when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded near Harrisburg, PA, damaging road and bridge structures.
The only portion of the roadway that will remain closed is the ramp from I-81 N to Route 22/322 W.
Two spans of the eastbound Route 22 Bridge above the ramp were damaged by the fire and were in danger of collapsing onto the interstate. Damaged spans have been removed but additional work is required. Officials have said repairs to the bridge could take 2-3 months and cost approximately $10 million.
